AIAG & VDA FMEA - OVERVIEW

If you can prioritize your risks you can also work effectivly with improvements

There are many ways to do preventive risk analysis, but the most widely accepted is FMEA, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis. An FMEA can be done for a system, product or process and in all cases the Failure Mode, Probability and Detectability are analyzed.

It has been widely used in the automotive industry for more than 50 years with roughly the same structure. Now an improved version has been developed that improves the final result. A brief description of the content is also available in the white paper (pdf).

NEW: Software is now available to support and effectively implement AIAG & VDA FMEA; PQ-FMEA

What is FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect analysis)?

A Failure Mode and Effect analysis, FMEA is a way to determine risks for, for example, a product, a process or a system. Instead of allowing only discussions and strong individuals to influence the order of priority for risks of a phenomenon, an FMEA provides a standardized way of coming to agreements about risks. In the new version of FMEA developed by AIAG & VDA, the way to finally evaluate the risks has been improved with the aim of making the method an engine in a continuous work with risk minimization and improvements. Five “T:s” form the basis for work with FMEA according to the new model.
  • FMEA InTent – Why are we doing FMEA?
  • FMEA Team – Who needs to be on the team?
  • FMEA Task – What work needs to be done?
  • FMEA Tool – How do we conduct the analysis?
  • FMEA Timing – When is this due?

Why FMEA?

A Failure Mode & Effect Analysis is a cross-functional , systematic and analytical method intended for:

  • evaluating potential technical risks for failures in a product, process or system
  • analyze causes and effects to such failures
  • document preventive and detective actions

An FMEA may/should be carried out/updated when (examples):

  • Development of a new product or process,
  • A new business situation
  • A new project
  • etc

Who can benefit from FMEA Training?

Knowledge and competence in FMEA should be held by many people in a company. With the new method, it becomes even more important to ensure that competence permeates the company from people who are engaged in some form of development via project groups to the company’s management team and this regardless of whether it concerns technical products or administrative services.

”Top management is responsible for the introduction of FMEA. Basically, it is top management that bears the final responsibility for identified risks and proposed risk reduction measures in FMEA.”

Tools

PQ FMEA (NEWS)
PQ FMEA from PROQUAL allows you to easily perform basic and family FMEAs according to the AIAG & VDA 7-step model and develop action plans and control plans for individual products.

We will soon develop menus in the program in Swedish.

Read more on the PQ-FMEA website.

Further development and training in FMEA

We give you value in our FMEA trainings and build our trainings on material from VDA QMC and have also developed our own material. Therefore, we provide four options of training, depending on needs and background:

  • Basic (VDA 442); Two days of basic training for people who will work with risk analysis, but who have limited knowledge since before
  • Coordinator (VDA 442+); The new FMEA version supports a continuous work with risk minimization better than previous FMEA versions. This three-day course is based on vda QMC’s two-day course (442), but we have also added a day of skills development in FMEA coordination containing: Challenges, cross-functional collaboration, prioritization of (multiple) results, reporting of results, conflict management and facilitation.
