What is VDA 2?
VDA 2 is a standard for the approval of new processes and products, based on the PPA (German PPF – Produktions Prozess Freigabe), which in turn is based on the US PPAP standard. This standard was updated in 2020 and has become more flexible, especially adapted for products that include embedded software.
The purpose of VDA 2 is to ensure that suppliers demonstrate before series delivery that the manufacturing process is risk-free for the customer and that the product meets all the requirements of the specification.
Documentation required by VDA 2
To comply with the VDA 2 requirements, the following documentation is required:
Product development
Document detailing the design and development of the product.
Evolution of the production process
Documentation of how the manufacturing process has evolved.
Verification of the product
Evidence showing that the product meets the specified requirements.
Validation of the production process
Evident that the manufacturing process works according to
General accounting
Overall documentation supporting the whole development process.
Why?
VDA 2 is in most cases not a customer requirement (yet). There are customer specific requirements that require VDA 2 (but not PPAP). Implementing VDA 2 can still be an improvement provided that customers accept this.
In VDA 2, a so-called “Trigger Matrix” is used, which means that agreements are made between the customer and the supplier on which documents/evidence are required in individual cases, and which party is responsible (customer or supplier) depending on the risk. This makes VDA more flexible than before.
The introduction and implementation of VDA 2 can be advantageously preceded by the implementation of the “Maturity Level”, MLA.
Who?
Staff who benefit from knowing VDA 2 are those involved in project management and product development, as well as staff responsible for quality management and quality management systems.
- Project management
- Process development
- Quality management
- Purchasing/Supplier Development
Training in VDA 2
Application and implementation of VDA should be done when a customer has direct requirements for VDA 2 and when PPAP (AIAG) is not accepted, e.g. when software is included in the product (which is not covered by PPAP.
VDA 2 is available for purchase in our webshop and it is relatively easy to implement the approach in VDA 2 in an existing management system. In addition, further development can consist of:
- Training (open or internal/company specific)
- Consulting work in the form of updating management systems, possibly in combination with internal (training)
- Interface audit i.e. review of processes for handover to production, customer or from supplier
